A week of campaign against the Senate vote on the Cybersecurity Act of 2012

The campaign will encourage individuals to contact their Senators in support of amendments to CSA that would better safeguard privacy. The Stop Cyber Spying coalition supports an amendment from Senators Al Franken and Rand Paul that would ensure companies do not have new, overboard authority to monitor and block private communications. The coalition also opposes attempts to remove privacy protections in the bill, including any amendments that would hand the reins of America’s cybersecurity systems to a secretive military intelligence agency like the NSA, which is not accountable to the public for what it does with our private data. Last April, a similar coalition joined forces for the original Stop Cyber Spying campaign, a week of action in opposition to the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, otherwise known as CISPA. Ultimately, CISPA passed the House of Representatives, but not before major outcry that helped lead to substantial privacy improvements, a veto threat from the White House, and a significant number of “no” votes on a bill that previously looked poised to sail through with little opposition. The Stop Cyber Spying campaign now hopes to beat back floor amendments to the CSA that could make the bill look more like CISPA.The Twitter hashtag for the campaign is #DefendPrivacy. Ásia: Corruption: Red Card In Sports

first_img Efforts are under way to prevent illegal betting and match-fixing in sports, which has led to cases of corruption across the globe. Interpol, the world’s largest international police organization, estimates that hundreds of millions of dollars are gambled illegally on soccer in Asia alone. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, an Interpol operation in China, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand resulted in more than 5,000 arrests for illegal gambling totaling more than $155 million worth of bets. In May 2011, FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, announced a €20 million euro ($29 million) donation to Interpol over 10 years to target illegal betting and match-fixing. The initiative seeks to protect the sport, the players and the fans from corruption and fraud, as well as provide Interpol training and education against corruption. ‘MoBay City Run could be a catalyst for major sports tourism drive’

first_imgWestern Bureau:In addition to being the tourist capital of Jamaica, Montego Bay, through its MoBay City Run, coupled with the plethora of some of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, could become a major pull for travellers seeking high-end sports and wellness activities. The idea was pitched at yesterday’s press briefing for the May 1 MoBay City Run by Dr Horace Chang, in whose North West St James constituency the event has been located since inception.”The entire community has begun looking at the City Run as a calendar event for Montego Bay and I want to commend the organisers and those who originated the idea, as it brings out not only the support for higher education, but also brings the city together,” said Chang.”In addition to that, it could well become another event to attract a high volume of our visitors, as we are still the resort capital of Jamaica and indeed the Caribbean,” he added.UNIQUE POSITIONThe run, he said, could easily become part of the international 10K/5K calendar and with the large number of golf courses and available tennis courts, Montego Bay is uniquely positioned to benefit from the lucrative sports tourism market. He said the city has the required infrastructure to facilitate tourists in large numbers. This year’s event will also celebrate the establishing of Montego Bay’s city status 35 years ago.Montego Bay Mayor Glendon Harris told The Gleaner that the City Run will highlight the best of Montego Bay, acting as a unifying force in a city that struggles at times to maintain its good name. Both Chang and Harris were participants in the inaugural staging of MoBay City Run in 2014 and have used their respective offices and status within the city to endorse the event, which pulled well in excess of 2,000 participants last year. The event has raised more than $6.5 million in its two years, while supporting education with valuable scholarships to more than 200 students at the tertiary level so far, and organisers are hoping to double the recipients’ pool this year.Entry Fee: Groups – 20 or more – $1,500 per person; individuals – $2,000 (Early Bird Special), which ends on April 15.After April 15, the registration cost will increase by $500 per category (group or individual).Janet Silvera, chairman of the MoBay City Run Organising Committee, revealed that registration has been going well and that they have surpassed 1,500 registered participants at this early stage.last_img read more

Davis Cup tie will be De Voest’s last

first_img2 April 2014South African Davis Cup star Rik De Voest announced at the Irene Country Club on Tuesday that the Davis Cup tie against Lithuania, to be played from 4 to 6 April, would be his last for the country. The 33-year-old confirmed that after 15 years as a professional the tie to be played this weekend would be his last outing in the green and gold.‘A memorable journey’“This is my 20th Davis Cup tie I will be playing for my country and it’s fitting, here at my home club in Irene, I play that tie and call time on my Davis Cup duties. It’s been a memorable journey and I am very proud in what I have achieved,” he said.De Voest also confirmed that he would retire from professional tennis in the next few months, but before doing that he had to meet some on court obligations.“My wife Carolyn [a Canadian] has just given birth to our first child Morgan and my life has changed. I am now a family man with new goals, objectives and priorities and my last tournament will be in my new home city, Vancouver, Canada,” De Voest explained.Davis Cup awardThe International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced that they would be presenting De Voest with a special Davis Cup award on the Saturday [5 April] of the tie, to commemorate his 20th tie in the competition.De Voest will be one of only four South African players to have played 20 or more ties for their country. The others to have achieved the milestone are Cliff Drysdale, Frew McMillan and Wayne Ferreira.Line-up not yet confirmedMeanwhile, South African captain John-Laffnie de Jager said his team was well prepared for the showdown with Lithuania, but could not confirm who would be his second singles player after De Voest.“I have told all the boys that the second spot is up for grabs and whoever performs best this week will be able to fill that spot,” De Jager said.He has until Thursday to name his final four players from his five man squad. De Voest and doubles specialist Raven Klaasen are given choices, but the remaining two spots will be filled by Dean O’Brien, Jean Andersen or Ruan Roelofse.Adapting wellLithuanian captain Rimvydas Mugevicius said his team were adapting well to the altitude and were hitting the ball better each day.Ricardos Berankis, the top ranked Lithuanian player, said he was pleasantly surprised at how well the court was playing and he was feeling quite confident after two days of practice.‘A tough one’“This tie is going to be a tough one,” Berankis reckoned. “South Africa have a good team with lots of experience. I don’t know the players that well, but we have a few more days to watch them in action and strategise accordingly.”With only four players at his disposal, the Mugevivius said he had very little choice, but would decide on Thursday who to play in the doubles. He is expected to select Berankis and his second highest ranked player, Laurynas Grigelis, to play singles, but could be forced to use both Berankis and Grigelis in the doubles too because his third and fourth players, Lukas Mugevicius and Mantas Bugailiskis, are “young, with very little Davis Cup experience”.DrawThe official draw for the tie takes place at 10:00 on Thursday morning at the Irene Dairy Farm, just outside Centurion, where both captains will name their four players and their singles line up and doubles teams. Internationally acclaimed tennis referee and umpire Gerry Armstrong of England will officiate the draw.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Novel photosynthesis trait to improve corn yield and sustainability

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Benson Hill Biosystems, a crop improvement company unlocking the natural genetic diversity of plants, and Beck’s  are partnering to bring to market the first photosynthetic efficiency trait, enabling corn farmers to increase the yield, sustainability and profitability of their farms.Sunlight is the critical natural input for food production, capturing and storing carbon as a source for all energy, but photosynthesis is highly inefficient. Increasing carbon capture by improving photosynthesis efficiency is recognized as an important opportunity to improve crop productivity and sustainability.“For years, trait innovation has been largely limited to only the largest multinational companies. The goal of our product development and testing programs has always been to help farmers succeed by bringing them more choice and profitability,” said Kevin Cavanaugh, Director of Research at Beck’s. “We have been working with Benson Hill now for years and are convinced that this collaboration will allow us to open new channels for innovation and greater opportunity for our customers.”Benson Hill has developed a robust pipeline of trait product candidates that improve crop photosynthetic efficiency, one of which has demonstrated significant yield increases in hybrid corn across three years of field trials in a broad range of environments and genetic backgrounds. Through its co-development and commercialization agreement, Beck’s and Benson Hill will advance a trait product candidate through the final stages of development and anticipate filing a regulatory dossier with the USDA by 2021.“It’s encouraging to see companies tackling some of the most critical and challenging areas of crop improvement such as photosynthesis,” said David Ertl, Technology Commercialization Manager at the Iowa Corn Promotion Board. “Novel trait development research is important, but it is equally important that these trait developers partner with others in the seed industry to commercialize these traits and get them into the hands of farmers.”The partnership is particularly timely given the unprecedented level of consolidation underway in the agriculture industry. Through true collaboration, the companies will combine their expertise in product development, testing, and commercialization to bring greater choice to farmers in the marketplace. The companies plan to broadly license this exciting technology to many seed corn companies so that all farmers will have the opportunity to increase corn yields.“When we started Benson Hill, we envisioned that the intersection of disciplines known as cloud biology could help address major challenges like improving photosynthesis,” said Matthew Crisp, CEO and co-founder of Benson Hill. “This outcome has since been demonstrated, and dedicated partners like Beck’s are now helping us define new channels to market for the resulting product opportunities.”last_img read more

Google Apps Now Supports Multiple Domains

first_img3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now Related Posts alex williams IT + Project Management: A Love Affair Multiple domain support is a standard of Microsoft Exchange. Multiple domain support is offered through its online services but there are limits on the number of domains available.Zoho also supports multiple domains. According to Raju Vegesna:“A typical business has multiple domains associated (imagine RWW having readwriteweb.com, rww.com, rrweb.com etc). Now you may want to create email addresses, subdomains etc for each of these domains. Supporting multiple domains lets you do things like create aliases that work with all domains. For example, you have [email protected], but you can easily create aliases so that [email protected] and [email protected] can point to your actual email address. There are several other advantages with supporting multiple domains. In our case, we have three divisions (Zoho, ManageEngine, WebNMS etc). For each of the divisions, we have separate email addresses with that domain name and then sub-domains, product names etc. Managing all these from a single console is a unified experience. That is how we internally use it. But we have several customers who use it in other ways.”Multiple domain support is available for Google Apps Premiere and Education edition users at no additional charge. Google Apps now has multi-domain support, allowing organizations with two or more domains to manage from a single control panel. Until now, Google Apps permitted one domain per account. That has become an issue, especially for larger organizations, migrating employees on multiple domains. Companies would either set up other domains as domain aliases or set up different Google Apps accounts for each domain.According to the blog !escunid , this is how the process worked before: Source: !escunid Online Business DevelopmentThe new multi-domain support is an admin control that allows people on different domains to keep their email addresses but see co-workers from other domains in the organization’s global address book.
