Bame Crowned ECOWAS Champion

first_imgNew Kru Town based old-timer football club, Bame was crowned champions on Sunday in the maiden edition of the ECOWAS Integrity and Solidarity Old-timer Football Tournament.The two-day ECOWAS Cup was held at the Alpha Old-timer Sports Pitch dubbed the Willis Knuckles Sports Pitch in Zubah Town with eight teams.Bame whipped Lakpazee Old-timer 4-2 in a lottery shot after 70 minutes of entertaining football ended 1-1.Beme’s hit man Francis Sayepaye opened the scoring in the 23rd minute from a close-range. Lakpazee had a peg back and Kollie Tehteh Jacobs beautifully headed home the equalizer.The tournament’s rules which called for a spot-kick was dispatched and Alfred Sayon’s Bame lifted the trophy.In the semi finals, Bame thrashed Bench 5-4 in a penalty shootout after 1-1 draw. Randolph Nyanfor got the opener for Bame in the 1st minute and was rotated in the 57th minute by Randall Glikan.Lakpazee Old-timer spanked Barnersville 2-1 to get to the finals, courtesy of Prince Harrison and Stephen Nimely in 5th and 60th minutes. Lakpazee consolation goal was netted by Wearl Venn in the 13th minute.In the Saturday’s preliminary rounds, Bench whipped Independent 3-1 in the opener.Tournament’s favorite Alpha Old-timer was spanked 2-0, courtesy of Ben Seedee and Rufus Neufville in the 2nd and 28th minutes. Youth and Sports Minister Lenn Eugene Nagne wouldn’t get a twist to get the back of his net and couldn’t get a converter to his three inspirational crosses.In the 3rd match Lakpazee and Sinkor drew goalless.Sinkor filed a protest against Lakpazee for fielding “illegal player Emmanuel Brown who was expelled by LONA for being underage.”The Grievance and Protest Committee, headed by Bryant McGill awarded the points to Lakpazee but fined the team US$250 and suspended goalie Emmanuel Brown.The two-day tournament is  part of the activities commemorating ECOWAS  40th Anniversary Celebration as a regional body, amongst series of  integration activities to reflect the success stories  of ECOWAS  towards enhancing  local participation  and promoting  Economic and Social  Integration among Member  States including Liberia .The Special Representative of the President of ECOWAS Commission in Liberia- Ambassador Babatunde Ajisomo, the Africa Union (AU) Ambassador to Liberia, Toyin Sholaja were among ambassadors who graced the tournament.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
