first_imgCheney10171218—57 Wellington21121016—59 Wellington: Avery Rusk 23, Lauryn Snipes 19, Tayland French 8, Shayland French 7, Taylor Zimmerman 2. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington girls basketball team finished fifth in the Haven Tournament and reached .500 for the first time this season with a 59-57 win over Cheney in the consolation championship game Saturday afternoon.Avery Rusk scored 23 points and Lauryn Snipes had 19 to help lift the Crusaders to victory. The game was a thriller coming down to the final 10 seconds. The game was tied 57-all with nine seconds remaining as Cheney made a big comeback late in the game. Wellington called timeout.“It was pretty simple in the huddle,” said Eric Adams, Wellington head girls basketball coach. “Get the ball to Snipes and everyone get the heck out of the way and then crash the boards hard.” Cheney would foul Snipes going to the basket with three seconds remaining and she hit both free throws to take the 59-57 lead. The Cardinals would attempt one shot from 15 feet but it would miss and the Lady Dukes prevailed.Wellington finished 2-1 in the tournament which is always good. The Crusaders will now travel to Buhler Tuesday as the teams get back to single night action. Buhler is 11-2 placing third in the Haven tournament beating the host Haven team 71-48 for third place.Kingman won the tournament with a 50-34 victory over Goddard. Kingman beat Wellington in the first round.Saturday, Wellington led 21-10 in the first quarter but was outscored in the second quarter 17-2 to lead at the half 33-27.“Before the game, we wanted to play our three/quarter court pressure man defense, mixing in with some trapping and let our defense be our best offense and the girls accomplished that,” Adams said.Out of the first 21 points, 14 came off fast break opportunities. The Cardinals did not let them rattle them.“Cheney is so well coached, and their defensive transition was so good in the second quarter which made us play more half-court style,” Adams said.Wellington went more to a half-court trapping style of defense which led to some easy baskets. The lead would swell to 15 points at one point. But Cheney cut back into the lead, when 6-footer Haley Albers would go on a tear, hitting some huge baskets including a couple three-point baskets and eventually tying the game at 57-all.In an earlier game, Wellington would beat Rose Hill 50-38 in a second round game on Friday.Rusk would score 17 points while Snipes had 16. GARDAI HUNT JOYRIDERS BEHIND SPATE OF THEFTS

first_imgGARDAI are today hunting a so-called ‘joyriding’ gang behind a spate of car thefts in the Rathmullan area.Three cars were stolen at the weekend – and two of them were burned out.Sources say gardai are still searching for a third vehicle. They were all stolen between the Rathmullan and Glenvar areas late on Friday night. The incident was one of numerous car crime events being investigated over the weekend and comes after Garda Traffic Corps Sergeant Iggy Larkin told RTE at the weekend that officers had seized an incredible 500 cars in the Letterkenny area alone this year. Many of these had been crushed, said Sgt Larkin. There were also serious incidents of boy racers joyriding in the town on Friday and Saturday night and residents in Ballyarr reported late night races on the route of the Donegal rally at 3am on Sunday. One senior Garda source told donegaldaily.com: “It’s no secret we have problems with boy racers but these spate of incidents in and around Rathmullan marks an escalation in the level of crime involved.” Sgt Larkin is a huge advocate of education in a bid to reduce car crime throughout County Donegal. He was backed up in that view on the Charlie Bird RTE1 radio programme by rally driver Toni Kelly.GARDAI HUNT JOYRIDERS BEHIND SPATE OF THEFTS was last modified: September 19th, 2011 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:car theftsletterkennyRathmullanlast_img read more
