Cavs arrange 3rd Finals showdown with Warriors, eliminate Celtics

first_imgThe Cavaliers basically conceded the East’s top seed to the Celtics at the end of the regular season by opting to rest its starters in advance of the playoffs. But they displayed their superiority over the final two games to wrap up the series. After allowing the Celtics to seize the early momentum in Game 4, the Cavs barely gave them the chance in Game 5.Led by its Big Three, Cleveland quickly built a 21-point lead in the first quarter, while getting lots of contributions from their teammates.Love continued to knock down shots from the outside, Irving sliced his way into the lane to the rim and James got free for several of his one-handed, tomahawk dunks. It was a very welcomed sight in Irving’s case, after he rolled his left ankle in the third quarter of Cleveland’s Game 4 win. He showed no signs of lingering issues, though, beating several defenders off the dribble and handing out seven assists.ADVERTISEMENT Cleveland’s 4-1 series’ win gives it a 12-1 record this postseason and sets up a third consecutive matchup with Western Conference champion Golden State, the team it beat in the Finals last season to claim the franchise’s first championship. It will mark the seventh straight trip to the Finals for James.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSSEA Games: Biñan football stadium stands out in preparedness, completionSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingREAD: LeBron James surpasses Jordan as all-time leading playoff scorerAvery Bradley led Boston with 23 points. Politics not faith drives festivals in Mumbai

first_imgThis Thursday there is no official holiday and still Mumbai will come to a near standstill. No, there is no bandh called by Shiv Sena or Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena. The city will be celebrating Dahi Handi, a festival that cherishes Lord Krishna’s childhood.Over the years, festivals, too, have been hijacked by political parties and Dahi Handi is no exception. Celebrations are on a gigantic scale and the economics, therefore, need much more than voluntary contributions. This is where the political parties come in the picture. But not all political parties celebrate every festival. It all depends on the hue the party has acquired and the community base it enjoys. So Dahi-Handi and Ganesh Festival in Mumbai belong to the Marathi Shiv Sena, Navratri (or daandia raas) is claimed by the Bharatiya Janata Party that is largely supported by the Gujaratis who account for more than 20 per cent of Mumbai’s 1.2 crore population and also hold the cash strings. There was a time when daandia was played mainly at Gujarati strongholds in suburbs such as Goregaon, Malad, Kandivali and Borivali in the west and Ghatkopar, Mulund in the east. It helped the local BJP connect with its voter base.Times have changed and with film stars and Bollywood composers jumping in the fray, the festival is no longer a mere congregation of families and friends.Celebrating Ganesh Festival in a public manner was Bal Gangadhar Tilak’s idea who led the Congress before the Gandhi- Nehru era. The idea was to rouse Indian public against the British.advertisementOver 60 years after independence, the festival is now firmly in the hands of Shiv Sena that used it to fund itself and its activities through contributions, often dubbed as annual extortion by the local traders who prefer to pay the bully rather than catching the bull by its horns. When they do, they pay much more than what they would otherwise pay as contribution. There was a time gutkha barons funded the celebrations, now it’s the builders who eye the redevelopment of old dilapidated buildings and want the residents to give a nod to their proposal.Dahi Handi has been a festival that had no such patronage, not so far. There are several disadvantages – it gets over in hours, unlike daandia and Ganesh Festival that run in nine nights and ten days respectively. Political parties had so far not paid much attention, except that die- hard sainiks saw it as an adventure sport that challenged their lads.Eyebrows were raised, therefore, when Sanjay Nirupam, who was in Shiv Sena in the 90s’, suddenly raised the stakes. He offered a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh to any mandal that would break the dahi handi organised by his mandal. It suddenly caught on as teams across Mumbai vied for the cash prize. Over a decade later, Nirupam has moved and settled in the Congress but the prize money is going up at a breakneck speed.Interestingly, two young NCP leaders Jitendra Avhad and Sachin Ahir are now ace dahi handi organisers and both offer cash prizes of over Rs 75 lakh. Ahir’s dahi-handi , that showcased belly-dancing, attracted controversy last year as NCP’s RR Patil is sternly opposed to dance bars.Similarly, Avhad was accused of not paying the promised prize, a charge he has stoutly refused. If you want to see how religion and politics go hand in hand, visit Mumbai for Dahi Handi on Thursday.Marathi prideShiv Sena and MNS vie with each other to pronounce themselves as the true guardian of Marathi pride. As a result, they often fight for credit over the same issue and the Congress- NCP government remains a mute spectator.Take the issue of Mumbai multiplexes not showing Marathi films. As the state government offered tax holidays to upcoming multiplexes a few years ago, it dictated that they must show Marathi movies. But the multiplex owners claim there is not much audience for Marathi movies and they either hold shows early in the day or not show them at all.MNS was first to act asking the owners to follow the policy in spirit or face the music.Sena followed suit, but as MNS had already attacked a few multiplexes, the party filed a Public Interest Litigation. But no Sena leader turned up for the hearing. Similarly, when Raj Thackeray went to see a Marathi movie, one expected him to sit through the film. But apparently he couldn’t take it beyond a point and left half- way through. So much for the love of Marathi from a man who possesses a huge collection of Western movies’ background tracks.  Wily Pawar can still fox his rivalsadvertisementNCP chief Sharad Pawar may be ailing, but he still has great political acumen. Realising that he was getting a bad name over the rising food prices even as he was getting ready take over as ICC president, he offered to relinquish a few portfolios.Pawar had said that he would give these away before the monsoon session of Parliament. It’s end of August and there is no sign yet.Meanwhile, realising that he was losing grip on the party, he held an extended executive session of the NCP in Mumbai over the weekend.Apart from the usual discourses, he made a couple of interesting observations about the opposition parties and Eknath Khadse in particular. He pointed how the Leader of Opposition (Khadse) made corruption allegations over development proposals in Mumbai and then entered an understanding with them.Khadse raised several issues in the legislature where he alleged that Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had committed several irregularities while granting NOCs to the construction proposals.Even as Pawar defended Chavan, his nephew Ajit Pawar,-a minister in Chavan’s cabinet-described him as selfish though without naming him. He told his audience in Satara that the Ashoka tree was quite selfish and doesn’t even offer shadow to others. ” It grows itself, without letting others grow,” he commented, leaving the audience in raptures.Chavan is not allowing several of the NCP proposals and has kept the administration on a tight leash, much like his father. A peeved Pawar returned the favour in public. The saga will not end here. Quaint plea to save Jinnah’s bungalowWhile the central government claims ownership over the bungalow as per the Enemy Property Act, his daughter Dina Wadia has been claiming right to the property that was also the venue where Mahatma Gandhi and Jinnah discussed the partition of India in 1944.As an act of goodwill to Jinnah, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru did not acquire the property under the Enemy Property Act and even offered rent to him. With Jinnah’s death in September 1948, the issue remained unresolved, only to be resurrected after his daughter staked her claim to the property. It’s not so much her claim to the property, but the basis of the claim that is quite interesting. Her lawyers have cited that Jinnah was not a mainstream Muslim, and that he was a Khoja Shia and therefore the Islamic Sharia does not apply in deciding the issue of inheritance of his property. They state that it is the Hindu law which should be applied. This claim is rather interesting and even amusing, since Jinnah, in his avatar as the leader of the Muslim League, had advocated that the Hindu majority and its representatives in the Indian National Congress will crush the Muslim minority. That was the foundation of his claim for a separate land for Muslims.advertisementAlmost six decades after his death and the birth of Pakistan.Jinnah’s daughter has turned the clocks back.It will be interesting to see how the courts view the argument. It will be some years, but the verdict will make headlines if the courts ruled Hindu law to decide the ownership of the property of the founder of an Islamic republic.last_img read more

Our favourite/Shopping Streets

first_imgThe charm of shopping on a street is a far cry from the mall-trawling experience. We bring you our ten favourite shopping streets across the globe.Champs-Æ?lysÅes, ParisIt really doesn’t get much prettier than the gorgeous Champs-Æ?lysÅes in Paris. Starting at the Arc de Triomphe, it runs a stretch of about two kilometres up to the Place de la Concorde and is flanked by trees on both sides. The Champs has come a long way since its days as mere fields, to its current status as the ‘it’ street for all things luxe. The must-see flagship store of Louis Vuitton that opened after remodelling in 2005 is one of many French brands on the avenue. Not too far away from the main avenue is the very chic Le Printemps, a grand magasins for men, women, beauty and home products.Shopping aside, the boutiques are a world away from the mall-trawling experience and are artistic and aesthetic feats embodying the Parisian penchant for luxury.Al fresco dining on a glorious sunny day, sipping a glass of wine, after hours spent shopping in Hermes, House of Guerlain, and car-spotting in the Mercedes, Renault or Peugeot showrooms, is the perfect end to a satisfying shopping spree.Ginza, TokyoSony’s fortunes may not be as high as during the giddy days of the 80s, prompting gadget geeks to give its famous building a miss. Anyway, its location is still prime. Plonked in the glitzy and hip Ginza district of the Japanese capital, the free Playstation games are still a way to keep the children busy, while adults browse the store or chill out in one of the building’s Hi-Vision theatres.Ginza is Tokyo’s high-end shopping district. Long before the US$ 100,000 per square metre days, it was the site of the Japanese silver coin mint. Its modern-day avatar as a popular shopping destination began after the city was hit by a rather powerful earthquake. All the famous Japanese department stores-Matsuzakaya, Mitsukoshi and others-comfortably compete for attention. Ginza has developed into a thriving hub combining the shopping with a kabuki theatre, art galleries, entertainment, restaurants and cafes. From the US$ 10 cup of coffee to every known luxury brand on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here.Grafton Street, DublinIt’s quite unlikely that Dublin attracts tourists for its shopping. However, since the Irish capital has shrugged off its stereotypical images ranging from shamrocks to U2 to emerge as a throbbing multi-cultural European city, it has attracted large volumes of tourists. Drinks, picture-postcard-perfect scenery and that warm Irish spirit are alive and well.Grafton Street is the smart pedestrian shopping area. Located between Trinity College and St Stephen’s Green, a walk along Grafton is much fun with a break at the Bewley’s Cafe, where James Joyce was a regular and standing by to hear the street musicians-no U2s in the making-as they churn out covers of Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens. The stretch is not particularly long, with an average walk-time of about 10 minutes. But it’s never that short as the street is home to stores such as Marks and Spencer’s, Brown Thomas (a department store with designer labels), HMV for an impressive music collection, book stores Hughes & Hughes and The Dublin Bookshop and even Dublin’s most exclusive jewellers, Weirs.Janpath, New DelhiNot far away from the magnificent colonial reminder, the Imperial Hotel, is the capital’s shopping heaven for tourists. Bargaining skills are always a plus in India and more so in Janpath, which stocks the must-take-back Indian memorabilia in plenty.Bronzes, brass, blingy textiles with loads of mirrorwork, Oms, Buddhas, slippers, bags, trinkets, T-shirts brazenly grace the surface. It’s easy to be worn out by the friendly salesmen trying to outdo your bargain pitches. Don’t be deterred, though as Janpath is amply kitted out with a number of cafes and Indian fast food restaurants. It is far from the world of malls and designer labels, but is an authentic bazaar with kiosks selling millions of handicrafts and artefacts. True gems can be found among the many objects, but a lot of patience and haggling is in order. Nevertheless, it’s a shopping experience unlike any other in the world.Las Ramblas, BarcelonaIn feisty Barcelona, where Gaudi stirs up passions, Las Ramblas is the first shopping stop for tourists. Pedestrians step over Joan Miro–well one of the artist’s creations anyway-as they soak in Catalan sounds and soul complete with human statue art, artist’s corners, and beautifully designed buildings sporting colourful facades. The shopping along Las Ramblas is all about ambience and atmosphere. Shops and restaurants line the entire length of Las Ramblas, but the increasing popularity, especially with tourists has resulted in a steep rise in prices. It is the city’s most vibrant and lively site offering an excellent introduction to Barcelona action and the city’s vibe. The Mercat de la Boquria is a lovely market particularly during the summer months, when fresh fruit and vegetables set the pace for colourful market activity.New Bond Street, LondonEarlier this year, New Bond Street in London’s Mayfair shot past the British capital’s Oxford Street as the most expensive retail street in the UK. The who’s who in luxury retail such as Armani, Chanel, Bvlgari, Asprey, Burberry, Pringle of Scotland, Gucci, Chopard, Cartier, Jimmy Choo, Jil Sander and Mulberry-just to name drop a bit-are all out here. The street is also supposed to have the most number of Royal Warrant holders-suppliers to the British royal family-in London. The historic association of Bond Street with leading auction houses and art dealers continues, albeit in a slightly tempered form. Bond Streets–both old and new-are a good site to throw in celebrity spotting while indulging in gratifying retail therapy among the world’s most exclusive brands. Smart and elegantly turned out boutiques and the high-end department store, Fenwick, make for a most productive day of raising the international style quotients in that most cosmopolitan of all cities.Orchard Road, SingaporeOrchard Road is very popular with the local residents and tourists alike-making it ever-busy-but in that organised and clean manner it has become synonymous with Singapore. With pedestrian malls, cafes, nightclubs, hotels and upmarket restaurants, it is also where the Istana or the official residence of the President of Singapore is located. In terms of size, Ngee Ann City is the largest mall on the road. Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Books Kinokuniya, the second-largest bookstore in Southeast Asia are all within the mall.Other popular malls and shopping centres include: Heeren, which is aimed at younger hipper customers has a multi-level HMV store and local designer outlets; Centrepoint, which is one of the locals’ favourites, is home to the Robinsons department store, and not to forget, Paragon, Singapore’s centre for all things upmarket, nice and expensive. Read Givenchy, Versace, Jean-Paul Gaultier and YSL.Pitt Street Mall, SydneyNo relation whatsoever to the Hollywood hunk, the Pitt Street Mall is the pedestrian-friendly zone of Pitt Street and is Sydney’s best known shopping destination. It is basically one block, but hosts flagship chain stores and has concentrated more than 500 specialty shops within two of Sydney’s blocks. A major area of the street is taken up by the likes of Westfield Centrepoint, Glasshouse, Imperial Arcade, Skygarden, Mid City Centre and the Strande Arcade. The atmosphere is always vibrant with the presence of street performers and musicians providing live entertainment. Like other international shopping developments, the Pitt Street Mall also hosts a large variety of restaurants and cafes offering an impressive choice for taking a pit-stop during shopping sprees.Rodeo Drive, LAIt’s oh-so-easy to spend literally, hours, at Los Angeles’ Rodeo Drive. And not have a single bag to one’s credit. Star gazing, people watching are perfectly accepted and time-honoured traditions for tourists. For sea-soned jet-setting shoppers though, the stores and shopping present an entirely different story altogether. The best time to do Rodeo Drive, really is December, when the Christmas festivities are in full swing. However, the actual breadth of shopping is limited to a mere three blocks. Barring the movie-set-styled Via Rodeo, the street is minimalist in decor with the who’s who of retail operating out of single-storey shop fronts.Hollywood staples such as Armani, Chanel, Gucci, Harry Winston, Tiffany and Cartier have a presence as do a number of couturiers, where a prior appointment is mandatory. Around Rodeo Drive are the American department stores such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Nieman Marcus as are streets filled with upmarket fashion outlets extending the shopping expeditions to much more than the original intended time.Via Monte Napoleone, MilanThe rivalry between Milan and Paris for title of Europe’s top fashion capital is legendary. It can safely be said the Montenapo and its surrounding streets have the highest concentration of luxury fashion-Italian and foreign-furniture stores, and antique dealers.Armani, Brioni, FerrÅ, Missoni, Prada, Roberto Cavalli, Valentino and Versace, occupy prominent positions of glory and pride. Punishment handed out to us is harsh, says disgraced Butt

first_imgPakistan cricket players Mohammad Amir, left, Salman Butt, right, and Mohammad Asif, centre rear.Pakistan’s disgraced cricketers, Salman Butt and Mohammed Amir returned home on Sunday after being banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) anti-corruption tribunal on corruption charges but faced no harsh reactions from the people at the airport. The two players came out quietly from the terminal building and slipped away in their waiting cars but not before insisting they were innocent of the spot-fixing charges brought against them.Talking to reporters inside the terminal building, the two banned players said they were shocked and still at a loss over the bans imposed on them.”The punishments handed out were harsh. We are innocent and we intend to use every avenue to get the bans overturned,” former Test captain Butt said.”We were not expecting such a verdict from the ICC tribunal and I have said all along we didn’t get a fair treatment or hearing at the hearings,” he added.”I had gone to Doha with some hopes but was not expecting I would be banned for ten years it is unacceptable and shocking for me,” he added.Butt, who was given a longer ban because of his central role in the no-ball scandal during the fourth Test against England at Lord’s last year said he would wait for the ICC to release the detailed judgement of the tribunal.”We are supposed to get the detailed judgement in two days time and we want to see the evidence on basis of which they have banned and then we will go into appeal,” he stated.advertisementThe ICC tribunal also banned pacer, Muhammad Asif for seven years and Aamer for five years.Aamer said he was still in a state of shock over the tribunal verdict.”I was not expecting this verdict at all and I say again I am insist and didn’t do any corruption,” he claimed.Aamer also complained about not getting fair treatment at the hearing on Saturday in Doha by the tribunal.”We are waiting for the ICC to release the detailed judgement of the tribunal after which we will decide what to do but we have made up our minds to appeal the ban in the first instance,” he added. He confirmed he had pleaded not guilty at the tribunal hearing.-With PTI inputslast_img read more

Rugby 7s, golf may feature in 2016 Olympics

first_imgRugby Sevens and golf virtually secured their spots as the two new sports for the 2016 Olympic Games when the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Executive Board voted in their favour here on on Thursday. The decision, taken by secret ballot, is not binding as it has to be rubber-stamped by the entire IOC membership in a vote in Copenhagen in October – if successful it would take the amount of sports to 28.Seven sports had been vying for inclusion to the 2016 Games, the venue for which will be voted on when the IOC meets in Denmark, with baseball, softball, rollersports, karate and squash all missing out.For the five sports who lost out there is no hope of continuing their fight as IOC president Jacques Rogge has said they cannot come to the vote as an alternative option should one of the recommended sports be voted down.Rugby, which in its traditional 15-a-side format featured at the Olympics four times at the start of the 20th century, had always been the front runner. After failing in their previous bid to get into the 2012 Games the sport’s powerbrokers mounted an aggressive and effective campaign, with International Rugby Board (IRB) president Bernard Lapasset making it the priority of his first term of office. His intention was to make it a truly global sport, ‘reaching out’ as he termed it, and as IRB chief executive Mike Miller pointed out the Sevens format is ideal for television as it is ‘fast and furious’ and also has the habit of producing upsets.Golf, which also appeared briefly at the Games in the early 1900s, had attracted a certain amount of scepticism even from golf lovers, in that it was too elitist and also several members hardly espouse the IOC value of sexual equality as they belong to male-only golf clubs. Also as Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy declared at one point ‘we are not members of a team we are individuals and we decide where we play’.2016 is also a Ryder Cup year.Several potential Olympic contenders who may be on the cusp of qualifying for either the American or European teams could well prefer to play in another tournament so they can garner enough points to make their respective Ryder Cup teams.Softball produced a very passionate campaign led by their Korean War veteran, president Don Porter, who had been stunned when they were voted out of the Games in Singapore in 2005.Indeed in a poll in the extremely influential Olympic publication ‘Sports Intern’ they topped the poll of IOC members, experts and specialist journalists – golf was fifth. However, in the end that meant little as Rogge once again showed he is without doubt the master of the IOC – having initially begun his regime looking a bit shaky – and his will prevailed.advertisementlast_img read more
