An exquisite, fascinating fossil find in northern China has provided new evidence that some Jurassic dinosaurs developed membranous wings like those seen in modern day bats. A complete analysis of the find is published in the journal Nature on May 8, detailing the new fossil, which researchers have named Ambopteryx longibranchium. The nearly-complete fossil was spotted in 2017, lying in a rock formation dating back 163 million years. Remnants of the creature’s plumage and tissues were well-preserved, allowing researchers to slowly piece together the history and form of the unusual dinosaur.The researchers found soft tissue around the dinosaur’s flanks and across its arms, showing it had folds of leathery skin that would have resembled wings. The fossil also contains a “styliform” — a long bone that extends from the wrist — providing further evidence the membrane likely ran from Ambopteryx’s flank to its fingertips.Measuring approximately 13 inches in length, Ambopteryx would have lived in the trees of the Jurassic period and used its wings to glide through the air, rather than for powered flight. It belongs to a group of dinosaurs known as the scansoriopterygids, which all contain lanky arms, but it’s only the second fossil found in the group to contain the styliform bone.That is significant, because it strengthens the case the first “bat-winged” fossil, located in 2015 from a location only 50 miles away, was indeed a flyer. Dubbed “Yi qi”, the fossil was bizarre enough that it divided paleontologist opinion on whether or not the creature had wings. We know dinosaurs eventually evolved feathery wings and became today’s birds, but besides Yi qi, there wasn’t any prior evidence in the fossil record to suggest this type of non-avian flight.That makes Ambopteryx a powerful find, lending weight to the idea Yi qi did indeed develop a separate method of flight, similar to that of the pterosaurs but different to the line of dinosaurs that would eventually become birds. The membrane may even be present in previously discovered members of the scansoriopterygids, though at present it is believed the other members had more bird-like wings.

Damages, disruption to businesses and increased gas prices all contribute to this. Another factor: lost jobs due to the storm.Lisa Givens, a spokesperson for the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), tells News 88.7 about 125,000 people in Texas have applied for Disaster Unemployment Assistance since Harvey hit.Givens says not all of those claims will be paid, as they’re still processing eligibility requirements. “As we move through the recovery process, we’re certainly looking to place people in employment,” Givens said. “We are anecdotally hearing many times these claims are for temporary situations of unemployment. But we just won’t know until the long term plays out.”More federal money is on the way to help with the situation. The Department of Labor has awarded a $30 million grant to the workforce commission to fund temporary jobs to aid cleanup, demolition and other Harvey recovery efforts. The commission is working with workforce development offices called Workforce Solutions to determine needs.“The Workforce Solutions offices can determine by looking at individual skills and assessing their skill level, they’ll be able to appropriately place them in employment that fits their needs, as well as the employers’ demands,” Givens said.Grants like these have been awarded to TWC in the past. An estimated $88 million in federal grant money was allocated to help after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A $13 million grant was awarded specifically for dislocated workers after the downturn of the gas and oil industry.Pre-Harvey, the Texas workforce was ticking up, adding 5,500 jobs in August. And annual employment growth for Texas was at 2.5 percent, which was more than double the annual growth rate set the previous year. On Nov. 8 The AfroAmerican Newspaper, in conjunction with Morgan State University, will host a symposium entitled “125 Years of Speaking Truth to Power.” The symposium will highlight the 125 years of the AFRO, with a focus on how the paper has covered presidential administrations, as well as Morgan’s 150th anniversary.Jake Oliver, CEO and publisher of the AFRO said, “I want people to get a sense of the enormous amount of history the AFRO has written about over the past 125 years. While it will be impossible to address all of the major historical events the AFRO has covered within the short time of the symposium, my hope is that those who attend will nevertheless come away with a deep appreciation of why a Black newspaper is critical to the progress of the American Black community.”Dewayne Wickham, dean of Morgan’s School of Global Journalism & Communication, said, “The Afro American Newspaper has had a long and impactful history of speaking truth to power. It has been the voice of Black America and the conscience of White America.”Oliver was interviewed on camera by Morgan representatives ahead of the symposium. Clips of the interview will be played during the symposium and then the panelists will react to Oliver’s comments. The discussion will cover five historical periods and the impact and influence each period had on Black America.The panelists for the symposium are journalist and filmmaker Tony Harris, writer and contributor Lauren Victoria Burke and professor and political analyst Dr. Jason Johnson.On the role of the Black press going forward Oliver said, “The role of the Black Press in the 21st century will continue to be the reporting of the news that involves and impacts the Black community. It will furthermore serve as a forum where Black thought can be aired and debated through editorials, commentaries, blogs, videos etc. It also must continue to promote issues important to the Black community at large, and to defend against the types of threats against our civil rights the coverage during the past 125 years so clearly dramatizes as having been too often threatened in innumerable ways.The symposium is one of many events to mark the celebration of the AFRO’s 125 years. Other events throughout the year include a concert at Morgan State University by Anthony Brown and group therAPy on Nov. 12 (ticketmaster.com), Ms. Santa in Dec., Character Education in Feb. and AFRO Clean/Green Block in 2017. The celebration culminates with the AFRO’s 125 Gala in 2017.
In the wake of the revelations, Disney suspended its advertising spending on YouTube, Bloomberg reported Wednesday. (Disney reps did not respond to requests for comment.) Other advertisers that have frozen their YouTube ad spending include Epic Games, maker of “Fortnite,” and Nestle U.S., per the report. McDonald’s also has pulled YouTube ad spending, according to a Wall Street Journal report.YouTube did not comment on advertisers suspending their spending. According to YouTube, after Watson posted his exposé, the service terminated over 400 accounts and channels that violated its policies, disabled comments on “tens of millions” of videos and also reported illegal activity to law-enforcement authorities.“Any content — including comments — that endangers minors is abhorrent, and we have clear policies prohibiting this on YouTube,” a YouTube rep said in a statement. “There’s more to be done, and we continue to work to improve and catch abuse more quickly.”According to Watson, videos in the “pedophile ring” had run ads from brands including McDonald’s, Lysol, Disney, Hershey Co.’s Reese’s, Purina, Grammarly, Ikea and GNC.It’s the latest in a string of “brand safety” scandals for YouTube involving ads served with inappropriate content. In the fall of 2017, YouTube was hit by a backlash over ads on videos that attracted child predators. Earlier that year, evidence that YouTube was placing ads against violent and extremist videos led to a broad boycott by hundreds of advertisers, including Procter & Gamble, AT&T, Dish Network and PepsiCo.AT&T only last month announced that it planned to resume buying ads on YouTube after almost a two-year hiatus, telling the New York Times that it had determined the platform had taken sufficient steps to make itself “brand safe.”In response to the advertiser pullouts in 2017, YouTube moved to tighten controls over how ads are served and set new restrictions on creator eligibility for revenue sharing. Some YouTubers complained of an “adpocalypse” that cut into their earnings after the changes. YouTube is facing yet another big advertiser backlash, with Disney, Epic Games and McDonald’s among the marketers said to have pulled their ad spending after the Google-owned video platform was accused of facilitating what a critic described as a “soft-core pedophilia ring.”Vlogger Matt Watson, in a Feb. 17 video on his YouTube channel MattsWhatItIs, showed how YouTube’s algorithms enabled a secret “wormhole” for pedophiles, who posted sexual comments on videos of young girls and identified sections of the videos where they were in compromising positions or suggestive poses.
