ALM Launches Dedicated Mobile Sites

first_imgALM is taking another big step in mobile optimization—what could be a crucial one for its mobile-friendly audience. The b-to-b publisher of more 20 titles focusing on the legal services industry has launched dedicated mobile sites for 14 of its national and regional brands. The move comes after the company optimized its newsletters for mobile devices in early March—which, it recently announced, has boosted open rates by more than 60 percent—and follows the hire of Jeffrey Litvack as senior vice president of digital media last fall.“ALM’s focus on developing state-of-the art sites for accessing news content on mobile devices and tablets is in response to the adoption of mobile as a preferred means by legal professionals for how they wish to keep up to date on the developments of the industry,” Litvack says in a statement.Litvack’s comments are buttressed by survey results and internal metrics that suggest mobile is a key consumption platform among legal professionals. Close to 90 percent of lawyers use smartphones, according to the release, while mobile traffic to ALM properties has increased nearly 60 percent year-over-year.Content-wise, the mobile sites emphasize recency and breaking news, as opposed to ALM’s educational content or services, Litvack says. While ALM considered a responsive design solution, they felt dedicated mobile sites were preferable, given their goals.“Responsive design ultimately is a middle of the road approach,” he says. “It’s about making compromises—whether its on the mobile site or tablet or website.  This is especially true when it comes to advertising, because responsive advertising isn’t there yet. For b-to-b companies, the question is: Can you afford to manage multiple sites? Where our traffic is growing so significantly on mobile sites, it would be foolish of us to not optimize the experience.”last_img read more

Committee Staff Discuss Policy Bill Differences

first_imgIn the face of substantial differences over a variety of issues in the House and Senate versions of the fiscal 2017 defense authorization bill, the lead staff for the congressional committees that produced the two measures said the bills aren’t as far apart as it may seem.“The objectives are the same, the intent is the same,” Chris Brose, staff director for the Senate Armed Services Committee, said Tuesday at an American Enterprise Institute event. One of the tougher issues that will need to be settled in conference is funding. While they both stick to the topline requested by the Obama administration for DOD’s base budget, the House adds $18 billion from the department’s overseas contingency operations account for base budget needs not requested by the Pentagon. That maneuver, though, would shortchange funding for overseas operations and force the next administration to request supplementary war funds before the end of April. As a result, the White House has threatened to veto the measure.Bob Simmons, staff director for House Senate Armed Services, defended the bill’s fiscal approach, pointing out that Democrats had used it in the past, reported Defense News.“We’re doing all these things to help the Department of Defense,” Simmons added.  “If [the president is] going to veto it, he’s operating under false pretenses. We are taking care of the warfighter. We want to make sure those kids go into harm’s way with what they need.”The Senate version did not adopt the House framework, but Brose noted that SASC Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) also sought extra funds to pay for more equipment and higher force levels.“We have no disagreement over the need for this, and the challenge is how you deliver it with a topline both sides agree is inadequate,” Brose said. The Senate version also contains provisions that are opposed by the White House, including language that splits the position of undersecretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics into two posts — an undersecretary of defense for research and engineering and the renamed undersecretary for management and support. The committee’s reforms continue last year’s approach, which placed more acquisition authority in the hands of the services, Brose said. Pentagon to Outline Response to Any Move by EPA to Set Enforceable

first_imgConferees negotiating a compromise version of the fiscal 2019 defense authorization bill added language requiring the Defense Department to outline its plans for cleaning up on- and off-base drinking water supplies contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) after the Environmental Protection Agency establishes a regulatory standard for that class of chemicals. Within six months after EPA sets legally enforceable limits — or maximum contaminant levels — for PFAS exposure under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the department would be required to submit a report to Congress containing a plan to:assess any contamination at DOD installations and surrounding communities stemming from the department’s past use of agents containing PFAS;identify any remediation actions it plans to carry out using the maximum contaminant level established by EPA;provide an estimate of the cost and a schedule for completing planned cleanup activities; andprovide an assessment of past expenditures by local water authorities to address contamination before EPA established a maximum contaminant level, and an estimate of the cost to reimburse communities that performed cleanups to a level that did not exceed the new EPA standard.EPA has begun investigating the possibility of setting legally enforceable limits for PFOA and PFOS exposure as one of the steps it is taking to respond to nationwide concern over the presence of PFAS in water supplies. The agency, though, has not said how long it will take to set exposure limits for those chemicals, assuming the process reaches that point. At the Defense Communities National Summit in June, Jennifer McLain, acting deputy director of EPA’s office of ground water and drinking water, said there is no established timeline under the Safe Drinking Water Act for completing the regulatory determination process. The agency has started the preliminary phase of the process and officials still are discussing a possible timeframe, she said at the time. That effort is critical as a regulatory standard for the chemicals is needed for the Pentagon to implement appropriate cleanup actions. The same provision of the conference report to the authorization bill, section 315, also directs the department to transfer funds to the Health and Human Services Department to conduct a study of the effects of PFAS exposure to humans. The Senate will vote to adopt the conference report Thursday, according to a statement Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) made on the chamber floor on Tuesday. Dan Cohen AUTHORlast_img read more

Middlesex Sheriff Koutoujian To Serve On National Task Force On Inmate Health

first_imgWASHINGTON, DC — The National Association of Counties (NACo) and the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) recently announced the formation of a joint task force to reduce jail inmate recidivism through continuity of health care services.Middlesex Sheriff Peter Koutoujian, who has been a leading voice in both the local and national discussions regarding the intersection of behavioral health and the criminal justice system, has been selected to serve on the task force. The task force, made up of NACo and NSA members representing county leaders, law enforcement, judges, prosecutors, public defenders, behavioral health and veterans’ services, will explore the impacts of the national mental and behavioral health crisis and the Medicaid Inmate Exclusion Policy (MIEP), which strips federal health and veterans’ benefits from individuals upon admission to jail – not upon conviction – leading to increased recidivism.“Stripping federal health benefits from those jailed but not convicted, and are presumed innocent, is a violation of their constitutional rights,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “By providing continuity of health care to those most in need, counties can help break the cycle of recidivism exacerbated by untreated physical and mental illnesses and substance use disorders.”“This task force will work tirelessly to remove the roadblocks people face in getting the care they need,” said NSA Executive Director and CEO Jonathan Thompson. “These experienced people will fix this problem and help the thousands of mentally ill citizens trapped in Americas’ jail without the proper care.” Members of the new task force will explore the impacts of existing federal policies on recidivism and health outcomes of local jail inmates. A focus will be placed on those individuals suffering from mental health, substance use disorders and/or other chronic health illnesses. An issue plaguing sheriffs and jails throughout the United States is that of the increasing number of inmates with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. Due to the lack of community resources, jails have become the de-facto mental health hospitals and treatment facilities and have assumed the liability as well. Across the nation, there is growing reliance on local jails to serve as “one-stop” treatment centers for these afflictions. Under current law, those who can afford bail keep their health care while those unable to pay – who are most susceptible to illness – face a gap in coverage. Research shows gaps in coverage lead to higher rates of recidivism resulting in over-incarceration.The double standard created by MIEP is putting undue strain on local judicial, law enforcement, public safety and human services systems leading to increased health care costs and poorer health outcomes. Having access to federal health benefits for non-convicted individuals would allow for improved coordination of care, while decreasing short-term costs to local taxpayers and long-term costs to the federal government. The suspension of federal benefits for pre-trial detainees not only presents constitutional challenges but also unjustly increases the fiscal impact on sheriffs and counties to pay for needed medical and mental health care, that but for their incarceration, the federal government would cover. These monies, if reinstated, would increase sheriffs’ ability to provide additional programming and resources to inmates and allow for a smoother transition into communities for the inmate without a lapse in benefits and medical care.Read more about the need to reinstate federal health care benefits for non-convicted justice-involved individuals here.Members of the Task Force:Co-Chair: Hon. Apples iPhone sales tanked Now all eyes are on whats ahead

first_img $999 The company had raised a red flag in November, when it said it would stop disclosing how many units it sells each quarter. On Tuesday, investors will get a more-detailed picture of what missed and why. More important, said analysts, will be what Apple says during its conference call about the state of the second quarter, which ends in March.”The big question is how much iPhone channel inventory Apple built in Q1,” Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Bernstein, wrote in a note to investors last week. Sacconaghi encouraged investors to listen for commentary on replacement cycles for the iPhone, reasons for the downturn in China and demand in other regions for the iPhone. “Our contention [is] that China only appears to account for half of the iPhone’s shortfall in Q1,” he wrote.UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri raised similar concerns in his investors note, writing that he’ll be paying attention to what Apple says about iPhone inventory levels, how long the company expects to be affected by demand in China, potential price reductions and iPhone upgrade cycles. Boost Mobile See It Apple’s iPhone XS didn’t sell as well as analysts had expected during the holiday season.  Angela Lang/CNET Early this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook gave us the bad news in broad strokes. On Tuesday, we’ll find out just how bad it was.In a letter shared with investors on Jan. 2, Cook revealed that revenue in the company’s fiscal first quarter, ended on Dec. 29, would miss Apple’s own forecasts by about 15 percent. He laid most of the blame on an economic slowdown in China. “In fact, most of our revenue shortfall to our guidance, and over 100 percent of our year-over-year worldwide revenue decline, occurred in Greater China across iPhone, Mac and iPad,” he wrote. Cook also blamed a decrease in carrier phone subsidies and higher prices overseas caused by a strong US dollar. Customers additionally took advantage of Apple’s $29 battery replacement offer, which lets them squeeze more life out of their older iPhones. The company now sees sales of $84 billion, well below the range of $89 billion to $94 billion it had forecast in November. The earnings warning was Apple’s first in more than 15 years. The weaker holiday season — a period when most of Apple’s iPhones are sold — fanned a growing belief that the industry as a whole, and Apple in particular, is grappling with consumer smartphone fatigue. Many people also pointed to the high price tags on Apple’s newest phones. The iPhone XS ranges from $999 to $1,349, depending on storage capacity, and the XS Max with 512 GB of storage costs as much as $1,499. By comparison, the MacBook Air starts at $999. RollsRoyce wants to shatter the electric plane speed record

Rolls-Royce/YASA When people think of Rolls-Royce, they very rarely think of it as being a brand on the cutting edge of technology. That’s probably because they’re thinking of that other Rolls-Royce, the one that makes cars. The Rolls-Royce that deals with aircraft is always looking forward and the latest proof of that comes in the form of its electric racing plane.Rolls’ electric racing plane was first announced earlier in 2019, and while on the face of things, its 500 horsepower rating and propeller-style propulsion may seem a bit old-fashioned, ACCEL as it’s known is anything but. In fact, Rolls-Royce plans to use it to set a speed record.45846734524-98fb54d989-kwebEnlarge ImageThe ACCEL from Rolls-Royce and YASA looks an awful lot like a racing plane from the 1930s. Rolls-Royce/YASA ACCEL — which stands for “accelerating electrification of flight” — makes use of several unique design ideas to further its record-breaking agenda. The 750-volt battery pack being used in the racer features 6,000 individual cells that together will offer 200 miles of range. To spin its single low-speed propeller, ACCEL uses three lightweight electric motors, stacked together which deliver a combined 500 hp.The shape of the plane is reminiscent of the racing monoplanes of the 1930s and 40s, as well as the sleek fighters employed by the Allies during World War II. This means that ACCEL features a sleek mono-wing design with a long and narrow fuselage that should allow the modestly-powered aircraft to exceed 300 miles per hour. VW Type 20 electric concept is a slick batteryelectric microbus

Volkswagen VW’s undergoing a bit of rebranding, taking its Electronics Research Laboratory in Silicon Valley and turning it into the Innovation and Engineering Center California, which will be its largest R&D facility outside Germany. To commemorate the occasion, it’s rolled out a wicked new concept that mixes both new and old.Volkswagen on Tuesday unveiled the Type 20 concept. Starting with a 1962 Type 2 11-window microbus, the automaker ripped out its guts and replaced it with something just a little more up to date. It sports a 10-kilowatt-hour battery, a 2,500-watt onboard charger and an electric motor that makes 120 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. There’s more than just a new powertrain in there. A clever pneumatic suspension, developed with Porsche, allows the Type 20 to change its ride height through software, rising as the driver approaches. Using a 720p wide-angle camera in the driver’s second window, the concept uses facial recognition to allow the driver entry to the vehicle. It keeps getting weirder, too. There are direction microphones in three locations — outside in the front, by the driver and in the back where the passengers are. These feed into a voice assistant that is capable of understanding more natural language commands than what VW currently offers in its passenger cars. If a command is given from the exterior, the vehicle “responds” with LED-light feedback through the headlights and the VW badge on the front end, but it can respond to certain questions like, “Are you ready to go?” Facial recognition technology means that the Type 20 will greet you by name as you approach and unlock the door for you. A quick look at the pictures below shows some weird, wild structures both inside and outside the Type 20 concept. These were created with the help of Autodesk, using something VW calls “generative design,” which creates some very organic shapes for the wheels, steering wheel, side mirror stanchions and the supports for the rear seats. Volkswagen determined a set of physical parameters and let a computer design around them. Designers then drilled down further until they had look that you see here. Weird, but still really cool. There’s also a holographic display in the dashboard that doesn’t require special glasses, likely an extension of the GTI concept VW created for this year’s Wörthersee show.Volkswagen will bring the Type 20 to Monterey Car Week later this summer, but its permanent home will be at the new Innovation and Engineering Center California to show visitors and employees alike what is possible using off-the-beaten-path ideas. Other historic and prototype cars will be on display alongside it, as well. 2 VW Type 20 concept takes what’s old and makes it new again Volkswagen Now playing: Watch this: 2020 Kia Telluride review: Kia’s new SUV has big style and bigger value Volkswagenlast_img read more

Kingfisher Airlines Pilots Stay Away from Work Over 40 Flights Cancelled

first_imgKingfisher Airlines hit an all time low Monday with over 40 of its flights being cancelled after the pilots stayed away from work over non-payment of their salaries.Pilots of the cash-strapped Airlines have been complaining about the management’s indifferent attitude and delay in the payment of their salaries for over three months. Several flights from Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata were cancelled after pilots didn’t report for work.”The flight loads have reduced because of our limited distribution ability caused by IATA suspension. We are therefore combining some of our flights. Also, some of the flights are being cancelled as a result of employee agitation on account of delayed salaries. This situation has arisen as a consequence of our bank accounts having been frozen by the tax authorities. We are making all possible efforts to remedy this temporary situation,” CNN IBN quoted a statement from the Airlines.”We will operate approximately 80 per cent of our planned schedule. We expect to return to our full schedule shortly. Those guests whose flights are affected are being notified. They are either being accommodated on other airlines or offered a full refund,” added the airline.Kingfisher CEO Sanjay Aggarwal had earlier met the pilots and requested them not to stay away from flying duties, assuring them that they would do all they could to unfreeze the bank accounts and pay the salaries.last_img read more

Will Smiths Aladdin trailer feature A Whole New World Watch

first_imgAladdin movie trailerDisney’s Aladdin (@disneyaladdin/Instagram)A month prior to the release of Avengers: Endgame movie, Walt Disney Studios has finally released a full-length trailer for their upcoming live-action remake of Aladdin. The trailer finally revealed Will Smith as Genie but what has made everyone talking is that this is going to be the first time in this movie where we got to hear “A Whole New World” song. The trailer features Mean Massoud as Aladdin, an Agrabah thief who is smitten with Sultan’s daughter, Princess Jasmine played by Naomi Scott. Aladdin meets Jafar, played by Marwan Kenzari, who takes Aladdin to a huge mountain where they could find the lamp. With the magical lamp, Jafar wishes to overthrow the Sultan but as it shows in the trailer, Aladdin takes the lamp for himself. After befriending Genie, Aladdin asks him to make him like a prince so that Princess Jasmine can fall in love with him. For this, Genie swiftly says that “You look like a prince on the outside, but I didn’t change anything on the outside.”In Aladdin’s recent trailer, we finally see the flying carpet and how Will Smith performs this musical dance number of “Friend Like Me” and how Jasmine sings, “A Whole New World.” Well, fans expected Disney to create a couple of new songs for this movie but still, it would be fun to see this live-action musical fantasy movie on the big screen. You can watch the trailer below:The upcoming Aladdin movie is based on Disney’s Aladdin and the Magic Lamp from One thousand and One Nights. The movie’s screenplay is co-written by John August and Guy Ritchie.Even before the release, Aladdin movie has drawn a lot of criticism for several reasons. At first, fans and movie experts criticized the movie for its decision to add a new original white character by casting actor Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders. At the same time, the decision to cast half-Indian actress Naomi Scott to play the lead of female Princess Jasmine also drawn criticism of colorism in Hollywood. Not only this, the previous look of Aladdin made many to wonder about Will Smith’s casting as Genie in the upcoming musical live-action movie. The first trailer was debuted during Grammy Awards and fans expressed disappointments for the poor use of CGIs. Several fans went on to say that Smith will never be able to recreate the magic of Robin Williams. Will Smith’s Aladdin movie is slated to release on May 24, 2019.last_img read more

Avengers Endgame trailer Tony Stark created those white spacesuits

first_imgAvengers Endgame movie trailerMarvel Studios (@marvelstudios/Instagram)Captain Marvel is heading towards $1 billion marks and now Marvel Studios has revealed the trailer (hopefully final one) of Avengers: Endgame, which may cross $500 million in the first weekend only. The recently released trailer of Avengers: Endgame looks amazing and it shows how the danger will fall on Thanos this time as we finally have Captain Marvel to fight the battle with our surviving Avengers. The entire trailer is filled with lots to surprises including a scene from the leaked synopsis of Endgame. However, the trailed depicted, for the first time ever, Avengers wearing a uniform — a white uniform no less. So, what is the significance behind this color and why all of a sudden Avengers decided to follow a dress code?If you remember, just a couple of months back, there were some leaked toy designs that indicated that all the Avengers are going to follow a dress code. During that time, fans were waiting for the very first trailer of Avengers: Endgame and had no idea that those leaks would actually come true.In the released trailer, we see Captain America, Ant-Man, Hawkeye, War Machine, Black Widow, Nebula, and Iron Man (yes, Iron Man is back on Earth — how did he survive Titan? Well, we don’t know yet!) marching towards their spaceship wearing these white new suits.I personally think that there are two reasons for wearing these white color suits. First, since they all would be traveling to space to kill Thanos, they will be needing a space suit. Since, Thor, Bruce Banner (Hulk), and Captain Marvel can breathe into space without any machine, these three chose to avoid wearing it. But it looks like Tony Stark might have come with a special looking suit for the rest of them — hence the dress code!Secondly, I believe that Avengers: Endgame movie will feature some sort of time travel. There have been several speculations and theories about the characters in the past that Avengers will be going back in time to stop Thanos from ever getting the Infinity Stones in the very first place. So, in order to time travel, they would be using the quantum realm and to survive in the realm, Tony Stark might have designed these special suits for them.Avengers: Endgame movie is slated to release on April 26, 2019, and in the three-hour long movie, we will finally get to know the exact reason behind the white color uniform of our beloved Avengers.last_img read more

And now I am back here again, still a rising superstar not making as many hit films (chuckles), as much as I would want to do so. I thank everyone for the opportunity to speak here. When I was shooting for Chak De in the city, I used to play Trivial (a game) with crew members on set. Because of being an Indian film actor, we often feel localised. It’s thus heartening that because of the Indian diaspora – the second generation of Indians here (people like Mitu) Indian cinema is getting noticed. It’s extremely gratifying and makes every Indian proud. I speak for everyone on the dais today, that we are happy to be here.”Witty and sharp as always Khan’s energy was matched by long-time collaborator and dear friend KJo. As their wise cracks entertained audiences, they also spoke about the overarching theme of courage. Karan said, “I have to start by thanking Mitu who has been such a strong force right through the festival. It’s not the films but the people behind the festival who make it what it is. When I see this fantastic panel and we say the theme is courage, I say the panel is reflective of the glorious courage of our films and changing face of Indian cinema. It represents three feature films that have changed the way we look at Indian cinema and how it has travelled across the globe and will continue to do so. There is Super Deluxe, Andhadhun and Gully Boy. All of these have appealed not only to the diaspora but to international audiences across the globe, making Indian cinema so proud. And what to say about Shah Rukh Khan, he fully represents super stardom. I firmly believe, in the era we belonged to, the term is understood because of him. It’s not just about his large heart but his tremendous presence and aura. The fact that he is an outstanding actor is hugest icing on the cake. I look forward to my time here and all the selection of movies is on point and resonant with the theme of courage.”Also in attendance were Zoya Akhtar, Rima Das, Thiagarajan Kumararaja, Vijay Sethupathi, Arjun Kapoor, Tabu, Gayathrie Shankar and filmmaker Sriram Raghavan.Mitu says, “It’s been 10 wonderful years of the festival. I’m so grateful for all the guests who have come here year on year and been part of the festival. I’m extremely humbled and excited to have Shah Rukh Khan here as our chief guest and to have the friend of our festival and one of the best film directors of India, Karan Johar. And the esteemed panel of guests. We take immense pride in the diversity and inclusion we represent at the festival and this year we’re celebrating courage and who better to display courage than these amazing filmmakers like Zoya, Thiagarajan, Sriram, Rima.”The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will go on from the 8th of August to the 15th of August in Melbourne, Australia. The festival will screen over 60 films from all across India and the subcontinent in over 22 languages. Film aficionados will get the opportunity to interact with their favourite artistes and filmmakers at the festival in event, pose questions at Panel Discussions and Q&A sessions post each screening.last_img read more

Can India top Vietnam in mobile phone exports to US as China

first_imgSamsung Galaxy Note 10 smartphone. Vietnam has been successful in luring the manufacturers fleeing China fearing more US sanctions over the trade war.TwitterIndia is confident of luring mobile phone makers leaving China for Vietnam fearing the US sanctions as President Donald Trump threatens to escalate a trade war with the Asian giant. A panel led by NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant is firming up a strategy that could ease the process for the mobile phone manufacturers to set up production centres in India, media reports suggest. The panel’s task is to prepare a blueprint to snatch back the initiative from Vietnam, which surged ahead of India after trailing it for some time. The Kant panel whose recommendations are expected soon boost electronic items’ export in general and mobile phones in particular, a report in the financial Express website said. The government set up the committee in the context of the failure of India’s phased manufacturing programme (PMP) for mobiles under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s the Make in India initiative while production of mobile handsets grew but imports outpaced it.Indian authorities reckon that higher unit production cost is the reason that the manufacturers fleeing China to escape the US trade sanctions are shunning India for Vietnam. The Kant panel will suggest a programme to ensure that the production cost in India remains competitive.India had headstartIndia’s apparent headstart by producing 140 million handsets compared with 38 million in Vietnam, gradually disappeared with smartphone sales rocketing, the report says. While both the countries produced a similar number of phones in 2017, Vietnam went way ahead following the closure of the Nokia factory in Chennai. Indian exports plummeted from the peak $4 billion, the report says. Last year saw a mild recovery to $2.7 billion. Vietnamese exports, however, have surged from $2.3 billion in 2010 to $49 billion in 2018. A Vietnam street. Vietnam is fast catching up with China in electronics exports.HOANG DINH NAM/AFP/Getty ImagesFact is Vietnam is pacing ahead of India on several other electronic products. Trade statistics show that while India’s exports of electronic goods other than mobile phones have been flat around $5 billion since the beginning of the decade, Vietnam’s exports rose about 10 times, from $3.6 billion in 2010 to $34.5 billion last year, reports show.Industry experts say India may have to match Vietnam in providing a better industrial environment to find success in luring some of the manufacturers eyeing Vietnam. The tax breaks that corporate houses enjoy in Vietnam are termed to have a lot of attraction for large manufacturers.New world economic order  Though nowhere near China’s dominance over global exports at 60 per cent, Vietnam is said to be an emerging powerhouse with already 10 per cent of the export market. Big players like Samsung have moved to Vietnam to hedge their investment in case of a long standoff between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The report quotes Counterpoint research associate director Tarun Pathak as saying, “Vietnam has a competitive edge over China in terms of labour and manufacturing costs, though China still dominates in terms of skill set, infrastructure and overall manufacturing efficiency.” India is not limiting its focus on electronics while anticipating a new world economic order. The Commerce Ministry under Piyush Goyal reckons that India can boost exports of some 350 products such as chemicals and granite to both US and China. A study by the Ministry officials says there are more than 150 products whose exports to China will gain traction because of the trade war. It has also identified that more than 200 Indian goods from rubber to graphite electrodes can substitute Chinese products. 125000 Unemployed Texas Workers Have Filed Claims After Harvey

first_imgJorge Sanhueza-Lyon / KUTAmong the costs of Hurricane Harvey are lost jobs.Early projections say Hurricane Harvey will end up costing $190 billion. Damages, disruption to businesses and increased gas prices all contribute to this. Another factor: lost jobs due to the storm.Lisa Givens, a spokesperson for the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), tells News 88.7 about 125,000 people in Texas have applied for Disaster Unemployment Assistance since Harvey hit.Givens says not all of those claims will be paid, as they’re still processing eligibility requirements. “As we move through the recovery process, we’re certainly looking to place people in employment,” Givens said. “We are anecdotally hearing many times these claims are for temporary situations of unemployment. But we just won’t know until the long term plays out.”More federal money is on the way to help with the situation. The Department of Labor has awarded a $30 million grant to the workforce commission to fund temporary jobs to aid cleanup, demolition and other Harvey recovery efforts. The commission is working with workforce development offices called Workforce Solutions to determine needs.“The Workforce Solutions offices can determine by looking at individual skills and assessing their skill level, they’ll be able to appropriately place them in employment that fits their needs, as well as the employers’ demands,” Givens said.Grants like these have been awarded to TWC in the past. An estimated $88 million in federal grant money was allocated to help after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. A $13 million grant was awarded specifically for dislocated workers after the downturn of the gas and oil industry.Pre-Harvey, the Texas workforce was ticking up, adding 5,500 jobs in August. And annual employment growth for Texas was at 2.5 percent, which was more than double the annual growth rate set the previous year.
