Apples iPhone sales tanked Now all eyes are on whats ahead

first_img $999 The company had raised a red flag in November, when it said it would stop disclosing how many units it sells each quarter. On Tuesday, investors will get a more-detailed picture of what missed and why. More important, said analysts, will be what Apple says during its conference call about the state of the second quarter, which ends in March.”The big question is how much iPhone channel inventory Apple built in Q1,” Toni Sacconaghi, an analyst at Bernstein, wrote in a note to investors last week. Sacconaghi encouraged investors to listen for commentary on replacement cycles for the iPhone, reasons for the downturn in China and demand in other regions for the iPhone. “Our contention [is] that China only appears to account for half of the iPhone’s shortfall in Q1,” he wrote.UBS analyst Timothy Arcuri raised similar concerns in his investors note, writing that he’ll be paying attention to what Apple says about iPhone inventory levels, how long the company expects to be affected by demand in China, potential price reductions and iPhone upgrade cycles. Boost Mobile See It Apple’s iPhone XS didn’t sell as well as analysts had expected during the holiday season.  Angela Lang/CNET Early this month, Apple CEO Tim Cook gave us the bad news in broad strokes. On Tuesday, we’ll find out just how bad it was.In a letter shared with investors on Jan. 2, Cook revealed that revenue in the company’s fiscal first quarter, ended on Dec. 29, would miss Apple’s own forecasts by about 15 percent. He laid most of the blame on an economic slowdown in China. “In fact, most of our revenue shortfall to our guidance, and over 100 percent of our year-over-year worldwide revenue decline, occurred in Greater China across iPhone, Mac and iPad,” he wrote. Cook also blamed a decrease in carrier phone subsidies and higher prices overseas caused by a strong US dollar. Customers additionally took advantage of Apple’s $29 battery replacement offer, which lets them squeeze more life out of their older iPhones. The company now sees sales of $84 billion, well below the range of $89 billion to $94 billion it had forecast in November. The earnings warning was Apple’s first in more than 15 years. The weaker holiday season — a period when most of Apple’s iPhones are sold — fanned a growing belief that the industry as a whole, and Apple in particular, is grappling with consumer smartphone fatigue. Many people also pointed to the high price tags on Apple’s newest phones. The iPhone XS ranges from $999 to $1,349, depending on storage capacity, and the XS Max with 512 GB of storage costs as much as $1,499. By comparison, the MacBook Air starts at $999. RollsRoyce wants to shatter the electric plane speed record

Rolls-Royce/YASA When people think of Rolls-Royce, they very rarely think of it as being a brand on the cutting edge of technology. That’s probably because they’re thinking of that other Rolls-Royce, the one that makes cars. The Rolls-Royce that deals with aircraft is always looking forward and the latest proof of that comes in the form of its electric racing plane.Rolls’ electric racing plane was first announced earlier in 2019, and while on the face of things, its 500 horsepower rating and propeller-style propulsion may seem a bit old-fashioned, ACCEL as it’s known is anything but. In fact, Rolls-Royce plans to use it to set a speed record.45846734524-98fb54d989-kwebEnlarge ImageThe ACCEL from Rolls-Royce and YASA looks an awful lot like a racing plane from the 1930s. Rolls-Royce/YASA ACCEL — which stands for “accelerating electrification of flight” — makes use of several unique design ideas to further its record-breaking agenda. The 750-volt battery pack being used in the racer features 6,000 individual cells that together will offer 200 miles of range. To spin its single low-speed propeller, ACCEL uses three lightweight electric motors, stacked together which deliver a combined 500 hp.The shape of the plane is reminiscent of the racing monoplanes of the 1930s and 40s, as well as the sleek fighters employed by the Allies during World War II. This means that ACCEL features a sleek mono-wing design with a long and narrow fuselage that should allow the modestly-powered aircraft to exceed 300 miles per hour. If you squeeze her cheeks or other parts of her anatomy she will tell you, “That hurts or stop touching me.”Video: Aiko at Ontario Science Center: November 22-23, 2008Aiko has the ability to talk and interact with humans with 13,000 sentence at her disposal. She has can be programmed to recognize intruders and immediately switch to a defense mode. If it is raining outdoors, she will bring you an umbrella. Aiko is a dream girl, but her inventor Le Trung envisions a day when Aiko clones can be used as security in airports and other public places, assistants for house-bound disabled people, the elderly and as office assistants. Aside from Aiko’s lovely appearance, Le Trung’s biggest claim to fame is the technology. He combined his innovative ‘Brain’ technology by programming in C# and Basic which constantly updates. The ‘Brain’ software controls speech, reading, math, vision, colors, hearing, automation and sensors. She is a work in progress with the best yet to come. Video: Aiko’s Smaller Hand: August 25, 2008Additionally, the software can control Robot kits like Kondo KHR2 through voice activation, automation and basic recognition. Uniquely, the ‘Brain’ software is designed to interact with Aiko’s environment, process the data, and record it in the internal memory. When the internal memory reaches full capacity, the synthesized data can be transferred into the server data base. The result is an evolving data base that can be shared and used by future Aiko clones. Le Trung has maxed out his personal funding and credit lines to create Aiko. Project Aiko has made the rounds with the press and public trade shows. The latest interview with a CNN reporter demonstrated the lighter side of Aiko. Aiko demonstrated her sight recognition features by recognizing the difference between a coca cola product and water and distinguishing food. While the public events thus far have been geared to attract public attention, the genius behind the ‘Brain’ technology and its future is astounding. The human applications for incorporating Aiko clones to assist sight-impaired and multi-modal impaired humans is almost limitless. Le Trung estimates Aiko clones can be mass-produced for $15,000 to $17,000 USD. At first blush, this amount may seem pricey, until you factor in the cost of a 24/7 human caregiver or security assistant.
